Making Desserts Healthy for the Whole Family

Desserts are a fun treat shared by families everywhere. They can be sweet, sour, fluffy and crunchy. Desserts are the perfect ending to any meal, but what if you could enjoy a dessert that is actually good for you? There are many things you can do to your desserts that will make them healthy for the whole family.

Make it Yourself

The first step to a healthy dessert is making it yourself. It is possible to be already made desserts at the store that are sugar free and fat free, but you never know how healthy a dessert is unless it’s coming from your kitchen. By making a dessert yourself, you can control the ingredients to make a healthy dessert as well as control any allergies you or a family member may have to particular ingredients.

Utilize Fruit

Fruit desserts can be yummy and healthy all at the same time. You don’t need to make a fruitcake or any cake with fruit in it or on it, just use the fruit. Buy all of your favorite fresh fruits from a store and make a fruit salad. Fruits have their own sweetness so your sweet tooth will still be satisfied. Because you aren’t using any other ingredients that are unhealthy, like a cake, if you wanted to, you could use fat free whipped cream for the topping. It’s sweet, and gives it that creamy texture you might be missing out on.

Healthy Dessert

Oatmeal

Oatmeal isn’t just for cookies or breakfast. There is nothing wrong with having a healthy bowl of oatmeal topped with your favorite fruit. You can even make cookies with fruit in them using healthy sugar supplements or natural sugars. Because you are using oatmeal, you could even sneak some chocolate chips in the cookies if you wanted to.

Low Fat

If you are making a cake or something involving dairy, try using low fat or non-fat products. This will still give you the flavor you need with a healthy version of the ingredients. If you can, you should also use recipes that use egg whites for a healthier dish.

Sugar Free

When someone hears the words “sugar” and “free” together, they might be a little skeptical on believing the dessert will be anything but bland. When buying from the store, that might be true, but when you make it at home and use the best ingredients, you will make a delicious dessert that will satisfy everyone.

When the mention of healthy desserts comes up, people tend to think you are crazy because desserts are supposed to be sweet and unhealthy and that is the whole purpose of a dessert. With the right ingredients and a homemade dessert, you can change everyone’s mind and they will be wanting more deliciously healthy dessert. Instead of traveling to the store to try to find a dessert for your next family get together, try making one on your own with the help of fruit and oatmeal.
